Crete packing list for families

Crete mixes long beach days with ancient palaces and serious gorge hikes, often in the same week. Bringing your own shade and the right shoes makes the whole island easier with kids.

Kristina's notes on Crete

  1. Crete is a big island, and driving from Chania to Heraklion takes a couple of hours. I split our stay between the west and east, or pick one base and plan easy day trips, rather than moving every night.
  2. The famous lagoon and pink-sand beaches like Balos and Elafonisi have little shade and get crowded by late morning. Arrive early with a beach umbrella or shade tent, plenty of water, and snacks.
  3. The Samaria Gorge is usually open from about May to October and is a long, full-day hike. It suits fit tweens and teens; with younger kids, the shorter Imbros Gorge is a better fit.
