Croatia packing list for families

A family trip to Croatia usually strings together Dubrovnik, an island or two, Split, and a day at Plitvice Lakes. Rocky beaches, boat days, and old-town dress rules are what shape this packing list.

Kristina's notes on Croatia

  1. Most families travel the coast in a line: Dubrovnik, a few islands, Split, then inland to Plitvice Lakes or Zagreb, flying into one airport and out of another. Catamarans link Dubrovnik, Korčula, Hvar, and Split in summer, so I book them ahead and keep bags small, since you carry them on yourself.
  2. Croatia uses the euro and is part of the Schengen area, so the same entry rules apply as for most of Europe. The EU's Entry/Exit System now registers US visitors at the border, and the ETIAS travel authorization is being introduced, so check whether you need it before you fly.
  3. The coast is warm and swimmable from June to September, but Plitvice and Zagreb run cooler and get afternoon storms. Beaches are mostly pebbles, and several old towns, including Split and Hvar, fine people for walking around in swimwear, so a cover-up comes with us every day.
