Lake District packing list for families

The Lake District is a place for walking, boating, and storybooks, and the weather changes several times a day. Packing proper rain gear lets your family enjoy it instead of waiting indoors.

Kristina's notes on England's Lake District

  1. Rain is part of the deal here in every season. I pack real waterproof jackets and waterproof hiking shoes for everyone, and then we go out anyway. The light after a shower is when the fells look their best.
  2. Roads are narrow and lakeside villages get congested on summer weekends. We pick one base, like Keswick, Ambleside, or Windermere, and use lake boats and buses as part of the fun.
  3. US citizens need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation before flying, and each child needs their own. I apply on the official app a few weeks ahead so it is one less thing to think about.
