Lake Garda packing list for families

Lake Garda feels like a beach holiday with castles, but its pebbly shores and mountain breezes call for a slightly different bag. Here is what we pack for swim days, ferries and Monte Baldo.

Kristina's notes on Lake Garda

  1. Most of Garda's shoreline is pebbles, not sand. Water shoes make the difference between kids who swim all afternoon and kids who refuse to go in.
  2. The lake has a reliable afternoon wind in the north near Riva and Torbole, which makes it great for sailing lessons. Families with little swimmers often prefer the calmer southern shore around Sirmione and Bardolino.
  3. Many hotels, ferries and cable cars run on a seasonal schedule and slow down or close in winter. Check timetables before you plan a car-free trip in the off-season.
