Mauritius packing list for families

Mauritius looks like an easy beach trip, and mostly it is, but the seasons are flipped from home and winter evenings can surprise you. This is what I pack for families, and how I pick the coast and month.

Kristina's notes on Mauritius

  1. The island is small, but the coasts feel different by season. In the windier winter months, I steer families to the west and north for calmer water and sunset views.
  2. Winter evenings (Jun–Aug) are cooler than people expect, especially up in the hills. Pack a light sweater or fleece for each child.
  3. Plan at least one inland day. Chamarel and the Black River Gorges viewpoints are easy wins with kids and a nice break from the beach.
