Okinawa feels like a beach trip with Japan's easy comforts, but its reefs, summer jellyfish, and typhoon season call for a few specific things. Here is what I pack for families.
Kristina's notes on Japan: Okinawa
- Habu box jellyfish appear in summer, roughly June through September. I stick to beaches with jellyfish nets and lifeguards, and I put the kids in full-coverage rash guards.
- A rental car makes the island much easier, but Japan does not accept a US license on its own. Get an International Driving Permit at home before you go.
- Typhoon season runs through the summer and early fall. Build a buffer day before your flight home and book refundable activities when you can.
