Türkiye (Turkey) packing list for families

A family trip to Türkiye often moves from Istanbul's mosques and bazaars to Cappadocia's cold dawn balloon flights and on to a hot summer coast. That range of weather and dress codes is what makes packing here a little different.

Kristina's notes on Türkiye

  1. A first family trip usually pairs Istanbul with Cappadocia, plus the coast around Bodrum or Antalya in summer. A short domestic flight links Istanbul with Kayseri or Nevşehir, and I give Cappadocia at least two nights so a canceled balloon morning has a backup.
  2. Mosques ask for covered shoulders and knees, and women and girls cover their hair, so I pack a light scarf for each of us. Shoes come off at the door, and visits pause during prayer times, especially Friday midday, so I plan sights around them.
  3. Cappadocia sits high on a plateau and runs much cooler than Istanbul, with freezing winter mornings, while the south coast is hot in July and August. US citizens can currently visit for tourism without a visa for up to 90 days, but passport validity rules apply, so check the latest before you book.
