Great Smoky Mountains packing list for families
A Smokies trip mixes waterfall hikes and wildlife with cozy cabins or a farm stay in the foothills. Mountain weather and trails make what you pack more important than it first seems.

Kristina's notes on Great Smoky Mountains
- The park has no entrance fee, but cars parked for more than 15 minutes need a parking tag. I buy one online before we arrive so we can pull straight into a trailhead.
- Mountain weather changes quickly and it's cooler up high, so I pack rain jackets and a warm layer even in summer. Short waterfall hikes and the park's Quiet Walkways are perfect for little legs.
- Black bears are common, and it's illegal to get within 50 yards. I teach kids to stay close on trails. If you're staying at Blackberry Farm, pack one nicer outfit for dinner and easy clothes for the farm activities.
