Lake Placid and Adirondacks packing list for families

The Adirondacks reward families who come ready for lakes, woods, and quick weather changes. A few smart layers and good bug protection matter more here than anything fancy.

Kristina's notes on Lake Placid & Adirondacks

  1. Black flies peak from late May through June, and they are no joke for little kids. If you can, come July through early October, and either way pack a good repellent and light long sleeves.
  2. Mornings by the lakes are cool even in July, then afternoons warm up fast. I pack fleeces and long pants for everyone alongside the swimsuits, plus water shoes for rocky lake bottoms.
  3. Lake Placid is a great base because the Olympic sites, Mirror Lake, and easy family hikes are all close. Cell service fades quickly once you leave town, so I download maps before any day trip into the park.
