Hawaii packing list for families

Every Hawaiian island has beaches, but they don't all pack the same. Kauai is wetter, the Big Island has snowy summits and lava fields, and Maui's Haleakalā sunrise is near freezing. Pick your islands and the list combines them.

Kristina's notes on Hawaii

  1. Island hopping means a short flight between islands, so I keep everyone's bag light and pack the beach gear we'll use on every island in one shared bag.
  2. In winter, north shores get big waves. For little swimmers, I stick to south and west beaches from November to March, when the water on those sides stays calmer.
  3. Hawaii bans sunscreens with oxybenzone and octinoxate. Mineral sunscreen and UPF swim shirts protect the reef and mean less reapplying on wiggly kids.
