Japan packing list for families
Japan with kids is mostly trains, walking, and taking your shoes off more often than you expect. Tokyo and Kyoto are city trips, Okinawa is a subtropical beach, and Niseko is deep winter, so pick your stops and the list combines them.

Kristina's notes on Japan
- Pack lighter than you think. Trains have limited luggage space, and big suitcases on the Shinkansen need a reserved seat with oversized-baggage space. Luggage forwarding between hotels is cheap and easy, so I send the big bags ahead and keep a backpack each.
- You'll take shoes off at temples, ryokans, some restaurants, and fitting rooms. Slip-on shoes and socks without holes save a lot of time with kids.
- Public trash cans are rare and many restrooms have no paper towels. A small pouch for trash and a hand towel for each person are tiny things that help every day.
